Whitman Mission National Historic Site commemorates Marcus and Narcissa Whitman and the role they played in establishing the Oregon Trail. Massacred in 1847 by members of the Cayuse tribe, the Park addresses the challenges of two cultures meeting and the circumstances surrounding this tragic event in history. On visiting Whitman Mission, some points of interest are the original mission site, the Whitman memorial shaft, and the visitor center.
