Why is the picture sometimes grayed out?
If you look at the VolcanoCam when it's night at Mount St. Helens, the picture will look dark and grainy, sometimes with a ghostly, glowing patch where the hotspots are in the crater. If it looks grayed out during daylight hours, it's because we have a very wet, rainy climate here, often with low-hanging clouds that obscure the view of the mountain. Once in a while, the picture will be completely grayed out due to a temporary malfunction, but this is rare. Forest Service officials at Mount St. Helens always work quickly to fix any problems that might arise.
