About Mount St. Helens:

Considered the most deadly and economically devastating volcanic event in U.S. history, the Mount St. Helens eruption on May 18, 1980 reduced the elevation of the mountain's summit by 1300 feet. Today 110,000 acres of Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument are set aside within Gifford Pinchot National Forest for research, recreation, and education. Visitor Center exhibits focus on geologic history, eyewitness accounts of the explosion, and the science of monitoring volcanic activity.
