With clouds of ash swelling in this depiction of Mount St. Helens erupting, Northwest artist Paul A. Lanquist manages to convey this amazing scene with cool blues and grays, which subdue the drama of the eruption despite its explosive and volatile reality. Flanked on one side by slender evergreens, distance and the illusion of safety is created as the viewer is separated from the scene by a dark, verdant ridge in the foreground. Creating an interesting interplay between color choice and content, Lanquist reveals through this fantastic illustration the dangerous beauty that is reminiscent of photographs taken from afar during the eruption of 1980.
