About John Day Fossil Beds:

Located within eastern Oregon's John Day River basin, John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is known for its long record of fossil plants and mammals spanning more than 40 million years. The Monument is divided into the Clarno, Painted Hills, and Sheep Rock Units. Each consists of remnants of the distant past within semi-desert shrublands, riparian zones, and colorful badlands. Visitors to the Monument enjoy hiking, sightseeing, and expanding their knowledge at the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center and the James Cant Ranch Historic District.
