About Hagerman Fossil Beds:
Located in south-central Idaho, Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument holds evidence of over two hundred different species of Pliocene era fossils. The Monument's undisturbed stratigraphic record spans over 500,000 years and contains charismatic megafauna including saber-toothed cats, mastodon, bears, camels, ground sloths, as well as smaller animals like rodents and frogs. Discovered in 1928 by a local rancher, the Hagerman Horse Quarry produced fossils of the first true single-toed horse (Equus simplicidens), an ancestor to modern-day horses.
