Grab your friends and put on your running shoes for a commemorative run at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks!
The Great Miter Retire Fun Run begins at
10:00 am on Saturday, October 7, 2023. Engineering exhibits will be on display near the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks for participants to enjoy. The Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Garden and Lake Washington Ship Canal Visitor Center will be available for participants to enjoy before and after the Fun Run. Participants are encouraged to take photos at the large lock Miter Gates and be considerate of all ongoing pedestrian and vessel traffic. Please follow all posted regulations while on site. Runs are NOT timed. Shirts will be available for pickup on the day of the race.
All registration funds will go to support new exhibits in the Fish Ladder Viewing Gallery.
The large lock center Miter Gates are original to the Locks and have functioned to facilitate navigation since 1916 when the Locks became operational. This October, work will commence to replace these gates. The improvements to this 106-year-old navigation infrastructure will help the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers supply reliable and dependable navigation over the years to come. Participants will have the chance to walk along these engineering marvels one last time during this 5k run.
Fun Run Route:
Vested volunteers, cones, yard fencing and ground markings will indicate the Fun Run route.
The Fun Run starts from the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks at 3015 NW 54th Street at the SW corner of the administration building. (
see map).

The route immediately crosses the #2 LL gates and then the #1 SL gates, then proceeds across the
spillway bridge towards the fishladder. Turn right down the fishladder ramp and continue west along
the water into Commodore Park. Continue on trail through the bollard and turn a sharp left-hand U-turn to
return east on the higher trail (counter clockwise around Commodore Park). Continue down the ramp
back to the fishladder area and head north on the spillway bridge, back over the small lock and large
lock miter gates.
Then turn right and head east along the lock wall, next turning north into the maintenance yard,
continuing to the outer employee parking area, then turning left thru the promenade vehicle gate.
Continue down the promenade turning left after the machine shop and continuing to circle the rose
garden clockwise. After circling the rose garden begin up the loop road in a clockwise direction. From
the loop road continue across grass to the greenhouse area, through that area to the promenade and
exit through the pedestrian exit. Get on the Burke Gilman Trail and run west until the intersection of Burke Gilman
Trail and Seaview Ave NW.
Turnaround and run back. Run east on Burke Gilman Trail and enter back into the pedestrian entrance to Lake Washington Ship Canal.
Quickly turn right into the nursery area and run by the greenhouse, across the lawn onto the loop road.
Continue counter clockwise around the loop road toward the administration building. Run towards the
rose garden and run counter clockwise around the rose garden. Turn right after the machine shop and run
down the promenade through the promenade vehicle gate into the outer employee parking lot. Run
into the inner parking lot, through the maintenance yard, through the maintenance gate on the
Lockwall. Turn right and run along the Lockwall towards the administration building. The finish line is
the SW corner of the administration building.
We hope to see you there for this momentous occasion!
