Product Details

In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt established the 1.1 million acre Siskiyou Forest Reserve. In 1907, Congress designated this reserve as the Siskiyou National Forest. The name Siskiyou is a Chinook-Cree Indian word meaning "bob-tailed horse" and refers to a horse lost during a fur expedition to this area in the early 1800s. Gold was discovered in Southwestern Oregon in 1852. Small mining camps grew into towns. Today, many areas reflect their history with names like Gold Beach, Illinois Valley, and Bear Camp. This map includes the Bureau of Land Management Coos Bay District.
