Originally known as the "Red Cinder Road," the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway became popularized in the 1950s as an access point to the crest of the Central Cascades. The route departs Bend, climbing west past Mt. Bachelor before dropping down to the base of South Sister and Broken Top.
