All types of wilderness travelers use GPS technology to pinpoint their exact location, follow a predetermined route, calculate distance, and find their way home. Unfortunately, GPS receivers aren't foolproof, or even simple to use. A lot of their value depends on your skill. Wilderness GPS familiarizes you with the features of your new GPS unit and teaches you how to use the Global Positioning System to navigate.

Wilderness GPS builds on basic navigation knowledge to cover:

  • Selecting your GPS device and related gear
  • Getting started and practicing common scenarios
  • Routefinding in wilderness settings
  • Navigating with your GPS device plus map and compass
  • Using a GPS device with your computer, tablet, or smartphone
  • Maximizing battery life

  • Whether you're a hiker, backpacker, kayaker, or backcountry skier, this straightforward handbook helps you get started quickly with your new device and maximize its usefulness. Here you'll learn how to obtain a trustworthy GPS position fix, determine distances and directions from your current position to your intended destination, save waypoints for future use, and overcome the problems and limitations of GPS technology.

Features: Paperback. 2013. 158 pp. Black and white photos, bibliography, and index. 5.5 x 8.5 x 0.5 in.
