About Stanley Maps

Stanley Friedman

After retiring at age 55, Stanley Friedman took up hiking and eventually scrambling (non-technical climbing - class 3 and 4). Initially hiking in northern California and then Norway, Stanley quickly moved on to France, Italy, Austria, and Switzerland. Eventually moving to Washington state, he hiked around from the North Cascades down to Mount Rainier five to six days a week.

Dissatisfied with the quality of U.S. hiking maps at the time, Stanley tried to persuade a U.S. Map maker to make maps for the Cascades utilizing a French technique, but to no avail. Like all great entrepreneurs, he eventually decided to do it himself. And voila - Stanley Maps! Designed by hikers and climbers for hikers and climbers. We hope you like them.
