MOUNT ST. HELENS N.V.M.

Considered the most deadly and economically devastating volcanic event in U.S. history, the Mount St. Helens eruption on May 18, 1980 reduced the elevation of the mountain's summit by 1300 feet when a massive debris avalanche triggered by an earthquake released pressurized gases within the volcano. Today Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument is set aside for research, recreation, and education. Exhibits focus on geologic history, eyewitness accounts of the explosion, and the science of monitoring volcanic activity.
