<description><![CDATA[Inspired by the forthcoming September airing on PBS of the six-part documentary series, "The National Parks: America's Best Idea", North Cascades National Park Complex presents a free summer speaker series at the Newhalem Creek Campground Amphitheater. The lineup includes conservationists, authors, professors, and park resource professionals.<br />

This Saturday, Ken Wilcox of the North Cascades Conservation Council speaks on "Wilderness Alps" at Newhalem Creek Campground Amphitheater. Admission is free. <br />

Directions: The Newhalem Creek Campground is located along the North Cascades Highway (State Route 20) at milepost 120, just west of the town of Newhalem. Cross the one-lane bridge over the Skagit River, continue past the registration station, and turn right at the four-way stop. The amphitheater is located in Loop A, across from campsite 13.<br />
<br />
Make it a Newhalem weekend! The Newhalem Creek Campground contains 114 campsites for $12 per night. Two of the campground's three loops are available on a first-come first-served basis. Reservations are available for the third loop and for group sites at <a target="_blank" href="http://www.recreation.gov">www.recreation.gov</a>. <br />

Stop by the North Cascades Visitor Center and pick up a free Junior Ranger booklet or borrow a free Family Fun Pack. <title>Mount St. Helens Institute's Sunday Hiking Program </title>

<description><![CDATA[The Mount St. Helens Institute’s popular FREE Sunday Hiking Program offers a series of 14 hikes in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.<br />
<br />
This Sunday, join a volunteer leader and fellow participants on a journey via Redrock Pass Trailhead to Loowit Trail via Butte Camp Trail, then Sheep Canyon Trail to Blue Lake and back to the trailhead. With fields of lupine, this hike offers nice views of Mount St. Helens, Goat Mountain, and Blue Lake. This 9.8-mile hike is rated difficult with a 1300-foot elevation gain.<br />
<br />
The suggested donation is $5.00 and families are welcome. All hikers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring appropriate gear for hiking: boots, layered clothing, water bottle, lunch and the ten essentials.<br />
